Over the years, we’ve seen many creative spellings—from “Scan Data” to “Sken-Data” to “ScanData.” That’s why today we’d like to share the story behind our company name and explain why we chose this particular name.
The Founding of SkenData: A Vision
In 2014, Sven Jantzen and Jon Meis founded SkenData with a clear mission: to develop software capable of calculating insurance values in a standardized, transparent, and automated manner. The insurance industry urgently needed a solution that would bring transparency and reliability to the valuation process—and that is exactly what we developed.
What does “Sken” mean? Its origin
It is often assumed that “Sken” is an abbreviation or variation of the word “scan.” But its true meaning is quite different—and more fitting for our company.
“Sken” comes from Swedish and means “to certify” or “to attest.” This meaning perfectly captures the essence of our work: We certify insurance coverage amounts and ensure reliability through standardized and transparent calculations. The Swedish origin of the word also highlights the international significance of our company.
Data: The second part of the name
The second part of our name is self-explanatory: “Data” refers to the data we work with. This is also reflected in our vision: “We make building data work.”
In the insurance industry, accurate data is the foundation for sound assessments and decisions. The combination of “Sken” and “Data” describes exactly what we do: We assess values based on data.
The use of an internal capital letter highlights the two components of our name and makes it easy to read.
